The Gambler On The Move?

By Blake VandeBunte • Aug 26th, 2008 • Category: 2008 season, Kenny Rogers

Kenny Rogers was one of several Tigers placed on waivers last week according to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press.  The Tigers will know today whether or not The Gambler slipped through waivers (he can be traded to any team) or whether he was claimed (he can only be traded to that team).

Morosi states that Rogers is an attractive player to be considered right now by contenders.  He won’t cost a team a top notch prospect and he’s a free agent once the season ends.

This morning on ESPN, Buster Olney stated that he thought the Yankees are probably the front runners for Rogers.  Waiver claims go in order by record from worst to best.  Odds are a bad team won’t trade for some one like Kenny with five weeks left in the season, that wouldn’t make any sense.  So these sorts of claims are usually made by teams currently out of the playoffs but within striking distance and want to go for it.  That just screams Yankees doesn’t it?

I imagine Rogers would be attractive to the Yankees because he’s pitched for them before and he’s familiar with their starting catcher, Pudge.  Also, the last time Kenny threw in the playoffs he was absolutely dominant.

If he’s going to be traded it will happen very soon.  I’ll keep my eyes peeled.

  1. Who else was put on waivers?

  2. Obviously Sheffield was. Lots of player get put on waivers but almost always nothing will happen. I’m betting Todd Jones was put on waivers. Quite often the names are not released to the press.
