Tigers Tee Off On Texas

By Blake VandeBunte • Aug 19th, 2008 • Category: 2008 season, Armando Galarraga, Matt Joyce

Tonight’s game is just wrapping up and boy has it been a weird one.  Heading into the sixth inning the Tigers held a modest 1-0 lead courtesy of a Matt Joyce solo homer.  Armando Galarraga gave up three runs in the bottom of the sixth when he gave up a three run shot to Chris Davis.  It was not looking good.  However, it played out a bit like last night’s game in that the Tigers exploded for a bunch of runs late, winning the game 11-3.

The Tigers plated nine runs in the seventh inning and completely shell-shocked the poor Rangers.  Matt Joyce hit another homer and Edgar Renteria added a solo shot.  Every player in the line up had at least one hit except for Miguel Cabrera who still managed to add his 96th RBI of the season.

Galarraga pitched pretty well against his old club and really only made one big mistake.  The bullpen took over after Armando went six innings (83 pitches) and shut down the Rangers the rest of the way.  It was nice to see Galarraga pitch well in his return to Texas.

Ramon Santiago got the start at second base for Polanco and took his spot in the line up as well, batting second.  Santiago had two hits as did Carlos Guillen, Gary Sheffield, and Matt Joyce.  It’s nice to see the TIgers get he job done against a team that has had trouble keeping the opposition off board all season.

The Tigers will go for the sweep tomorrow night in Texas.  Nate Robertson (ugh) is set to start against Kevin Millwood of the Rangers.  Good times.  The win tonight moves the Tigers to 62-64 on the season.  I just hope they can finish at .500 or better.  Who thought it would come to that?
