Freddy Garcia Update

By Blake VandeBunte • Jul 8th, 2008 • Category: 2008 season, Freddy Garcia

With Jeremy Bonderman out for the year it’s probably a bit of a stretch to think that Eddie Bonine will be his season long replacement.  The was probably said about Armando Galarraga, so who knows?  Anyway, if the Tigers are still contending two or three weeks from now they will almost surely get in on the bidding for Freddy Garcia.

Garcia is a former 18 game winner and has had some terrific success in the big leagues.  Injuries have derailed his past few seasons and he has spent the last year trying to get healthy.  His agent says that Garcia is currently throwing at 80% but should be at 100% by the end of the month.  That means the team that signs Garcia could be getting a very solid arm for a playoff run.

Many teams will get in on the bidding for Garcia.  He is attractive because all a team would give up to get him is cash.  They wouldn’t have to cough up prospects of any kind.  This is especially important to the Tigers who are trying to rebuild their farm system after the trades for Renteria, Willis and Cabrera.  Since it’s not my money, I’m all for the Tigers shelling out the cash and giving Garcia a shot down the stretch.
