Tigers Dominate Colorado
By Blake VandeBunte • Jun 28th, 2008 • Category: 2008 season, Clete Thomas, Curtis Granderson, Eddie Bonine, Joel ZumayaThe Tigers had some hot hitters stay hot on Friday night and Eddie Bonine threw very well as the Tigers beat the Rockies 7-1 at Comerica Park. Their latest win brings the Tigers to 39-40 on the season as they approach the half way point of the season. They will play their 81st game on Sunday.
Curtis Granderson continued to swing a hot bat as he went 4-5 with three runs scored. Granderson had a pair of singles and a pair of triples. When he is going right he is the ultimate table setter for this club. Yesterday’s hero, Clete Thomas, drew another walk today but also added three hits. Granderson now has his average all the way up to .294 and Thomas is hitting .325. It seems like the Tigers have had someone new turn hot at just the right time on a weekly basis. A week or so ago it was Marcus Thames, now it’s Granderson and Thomas. Granderson’s hit streak is now at 15 games.
Eddie Bonine started for the Tigers and he was terrific. Eddie lasted eight innings and gave up only one run. Bonine struck out only two batters but he didn’t walk anyone and needed only 99 pitches to get through his eight innings of work. Bonine is now 2-0 on the season with an ERA just below 4.00. I cannot imagine the guy will keep this sort of production up, but I will certainly take it.
Joel Zumaya came on in the ninth inning and gave up a double to Matt Holiday but got out of the inning without an further damage. It sure would be ideal for the Tigers to play some hot baseball for the next week or so which would allow Rodney and Zumaya time to work out the cobwebs of their game and get ready for the second half of the season.
While the Tigers are white hot, so is the rest of the American League Central. The first place White Sox have won their last two, including a win over the Cubs on Friday afternoon. The Minnesota Twins have won 10 straight games, the Indians have won their last two, and the Royals have won six straight games. The Tigers are five games out of first place. The Twins trail the White Sox by only half of a game.
