By Blake VandeBunte • Jun 21st, 2008 • Category: 2008 season, Casey Fossum, Eddie Bonine, Fernando Rodney, Joel Zumaya, Placido PolancoThe Tigers lost the opener of their series in San Diego last night. They lost the opener in San Francisco. They share a couple of things in common. Great starting pitching by the Tiger starter and Fernando Rodney completely imploding on the mound. Last night was a disaster for Rodney.
The Tigers trailed 2-1 heading into the 8th inning when Placido Polanco hit the longest (I’d have to guess) home run of his career to tie up the game. Rodney came on in the bottom of the 8th to keep things tied. He threw only eight pitches and all of them were balls. Doing the math you can figure out that he walked the first two batters he faced while they never even had to swing their bats. He was promptly pulled and the Tigers ended up losing 6-2. I won’t go into the ugliness anymore, I can’t stand to do it. Check out Bless You Boys for more if you are into making yourself feel like crap.
On the bright side, the Tigers did get a great start out of Eddie Bonine. Bonine went seven innings and gave up only two runs, both solo homers. The offense struggled a bit but they always struggle against guys like Greg Maddux while they hit several balls (not exaggerating) that went to the wall at Petco Park that would have either left any other park or bounced off the wall for double. Touch of bad luck, they did hit some balls hard. So this isn’t the same old struggling offense we saw earlier in the year. They were not awful on Friday night.
The only thing awful thing on Friday night was the bullpen, case closed. We saw Joel Zumaya for the first time and he hit 100 mph on the gun which is a good sign. However, Zumaya gave up a walk and a single while getting two outs. Casey Fossum was terrible.
So the Tigers will get back at it tonight. Game time is 10:05pm. Nate Robertson will start for the Tigers against Cha Seung Baek who they have faced a couple of times this season and threw in mop up duty out of the Mariner bullpen both times. One time he was decent, the other time he got rocked. So it’s not like the Tigers are going up against someone they know nothing about, they’ve all seen this guy. Hopefully they can get back on the winning track tonight.

Why didn’t Leyland put Seay in instead of Fossum. Another bad decision. Fossum sucks. I hope Rapada comes back soon. Did I just say that?
I’m guessing he didn’t put Seay in because Bobby Seay sucks.
