Freddy Garcia to the Tigers?
By Blake VandeBunte • Jun 18th, 2008 • Category: 2008 season, Freddy GarciaThe Detroit Free Press reports that the Tigers may have an interest in free agent pitcher, Freddy Garcia. The Tigers very clearly are in need of some depth in their starting rotation. S
ure, things have been looking up lately, but you can never have too much starting pitching. If, somehow, the Tigers are able to make the playoffs, they’ll need more pitching to succeed.
Garcia is best known for his years in Seattle and Chicago with the White Sox. Garcia has won at least 16 games four times in his career, with a career high of 18 in 2001 when he finished third in the Cy Young voting. Garcia has been plagued with injuries the past two seasons and hasn’t thrown an inning this season after throwing only 58 innings last season with the Phillies.
Garcia’s agent is reporting that he is currently throwing at about 75%. He thinks that Garcia should be good to go in the Major’s by August. Any contender that needs extra pitching will probably at least show interest in Garcia. Since he’s a free agent, he’ll just be able sign where he pleases, there will be no other teams to negotiate with.
Given that Dontrelle Willis and Jeremy Bonderman are both out until who knows when, the Tigers should take a serious look at Garcia, especially if it’s on a two month flier. If he fails, big deal. However, if it pans out it could help the Tigers get back to the playoffs. We shall see.

[...] With Jeremy Bonderman out for the year it’s probably a bit of a stretch to think that Eddie Bonine will be his season long replacement. The was probably said about Armando Galarraga, so who knows? Anyway, if the Tigers are still contending two or three weeks from now they will almost surely get in on the bidding for Freddy Garcia.
