Courtesy of Buster Olney’s ESPN.com Blog: Here’s the bottom line: Unless (Dontrelle) Willis and Miguel Cabrera begin to seriously focus on their conditioning and give themselves a chance to be great, Detroit’s off-season blockbuster trade — which was followed by $181 million in investment in the two players — is going to be remembered as one of the colossal busts of all time, because of the assets involved. Some scouts who have seen Willis believe that part of his problem is that he simply has gotten too big to maintain his complicated delivery, and unless he drops some weight, he will not be able to repeat his mechanics with any consistency.

Courtesy of Jerry Crasnick’s Recent “Starting 9″ Piece: “The guy (Cabrera) has a special bat, but he’s just so big and slow,” said an AL scout. “Maybe it’s not fair, but the first thing that enters your mind when you see a body like that is ‘undisciplined.’ It boils down to makeup. You never know what’s going to happen when you get somebody from another organization and pay him big money like that.”

  1. you know, that’s what’s really frustrating. both of them need to lose weight…and as far as i know, barring any sort of medical condition that i don’t think they have…there’s no reason why they can’t be at the weight they should be. i mean come on…if you’re paying someone that much…give me a break. they both look (and it shows in how they play) a bit larger than they should be.

  2. Preach it.

  3. [...] ESPN.com’s Buster Olney thinks Miguel Cabrera is too fat to hit. (hat-tip Spotstarters) [...]
