Polanco Gone
December 3rd, 2009 Posted in Placido PolancoPlacido Polanco didn’t receive an arbitration offer from the Tigers, making him all the more valuable on the open market. He didn’t last long on that open market and is reportedly heading to the Philadelphia Phillies.
It is being reported that Polanco is getting a 3-year deal worth $18M. There is a mutual option for the fourth year. The Phillies obviously don’t have room for Polanco at second base since they have Chase Utley, so it appears that Placido will be making a return to third base.
This closes the Polanco chapter in Detroit and I think it was a good one. Polanco was a steal in the first place and he was never tagged with the label of “overpaid”. Polanco played on some very good Tiger teams, but I’m glad the Tigers didn’t pony up this kind of cash to keep him. Good time for both parties to move on.

The Mets should have dumped Castillo for Polanco.

Polanco was one of my favorites. He was a very good player and a great person.

I guess I’m the only one that thinks $6M a year for Polly sounds fair.
I know that we are trying to be “financialy responsible” or whatever DD is calling it but I think we will really start to miss his glove after a month or so of the Sizemore ERA. Its not so much that I don’t feel as if he can succeed Polly, I’m just in the crowd that believes another year of AAA would only help develope him.
They don’t just hand out those Gold Gloves to anyone, you have to earn them. Last season our infield defense was pretty solid. We now have two pretty big question marks up the middle with no Polanco and no short stop. Offering Polanco arbitration would have at least netted a draft pick or rented him for another season. Instead I’m sure that they will resign Lyon and/or Rodney. It’s not that those moves are terible but many relievers could take their spot for league minimum.
Satterwhite, Weinhardt, Fien, Dolsi…
Just my opinion I guess
