So Long, Marcus
By Blake VandeBunte • Nov 6th, 2009 • Category: Marcus ThamesThe Tigers have cleared Marcus Thames from their 40-man roster, making the veteran a free agent. Thames, who has been with the Tigers since 2004, is coming off his worst season as a Tiger.
This doesn’t make it impossible for Thames to return to Detroit, but it makes sense that the two sides will probably got in different directions.
The Tigers are trying to save money and Thames is probably trying to get himself some more regular playing time. In 2009, Thames hit only 13 home runs and struggled with 72 strikeouts in only 258 at-bats. Thames had his best season during the Tigers impressive run in 2006 and had a pretty decent power year in 2008.
If the Tigers wanted to keep Thames on for 2010 it probably would have cost them around $3M and that just doesn’t make sense at all as they are cutting costs and trying to get younger.
I’ll miss Thames, but it’s time to move on. Best of luck, Marcus.

Marcus was one of the nicest Tigers that I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. It’s unfortunate (much like C-Mo) that sometimes business must come first. It was the right move though and it should have happened a year ago when teams were requesting him via trade.
Either way, best of luck Thames
Another jersey heads for the closet along w/ all of those Pudge jersey’s.
