Since The Break…

By Blake VandeBunte • Aug 26th, 2009 • Category: 2009 Season

I often hear baseball broadcasters and writers use the phrase:  “Since the All-Star break he’s…”.  So, just for kicks, here’s how the Tigers are doing since the All Star break:

  • Gerald Laird: .174/.237/.234  0 HR, 2 RBI, 2 SB
  • Miguel Cabrera: .397/.463/.664  9 HR, 32 RBI, 12 2B
  • Placido Polanco: .308/.339/.391  1 HR, 15 RBI, 23 R
  • Adam Everett: .164/.182/.205  1 HR, 8 RBI
  • Brandon Inge: .176/.245/.264  3 HR, 9 RBI, 47 K, 125 AB
  • Ryan Raburn: .278/.316/.486  4 HR, 11 RBI, 3 SB
  • Curtis Granderson: .268/.350/.528  7 HR, 14 RBI, 5 SB
  • Magglio Ordonez: .319/.394/.538  3 HR, 10 RBI, 7 2B
  • Marcus Thames: .207/.283/.390  4 HR, 8 RBI, 25 K, 82 AB
  • Clete Thomas: .204/.310/.286  2 XBH, 12 RBI, 34 K, 98 AB
  • Ramon Santiago: .230/.314/.328, 3 XBH, 5 RBI
  • Carlos Guillen: .282/.368/.495  6 HR, 19 RBI

Now for the pitchers:

  • Justin Verlander: 4-3, 3.38 ERA, 9.5 K/9, .246 BAVG
  • Edwin Jackson: 3-2, 3.86 ERA, 6.6 K/9, .286 BAVG
  • Armando Galarraga: 1-2, 4.95 ERA, 16 BB, 36 Innings
  • Rick Porcello:  2-2, 5.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 4.8 K/9
  • Fernando Rodney: 2-1, 2.08 ERA, 9 SV, 1.15 WHIP
  • Zach Miner: 0-3, 4.50 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, 14 BB, 22 Innings
  • Brandon Lyon: 3-0, 1.59 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 10.1 K/9
  • Ryan Perry: 3.22 ERA, 19 K, 16.2 innings, 1.32 WHIP
  • Bobby Seay: 3-1, 4.15 ERA, 1.38 WHIP

The guys I included on this list are players that spent a good chunk of the first of the season in Detroit and are still with the team now.  That’s why you don’t see guys like Fu-Te Ni, Jarrod Washburn, or Aubrey Huff.

  1. I thought it would be interesting to compare what the pre all star break numbers were for these same players. Didn’t find it in earlier posts, however I did find your post regarding the potential final stats for these players if they kept up their first half rates. For those not remembering - the rates were kept the same and the other stats were doubled. So how are they shaping up?

    * Gerald Laird: .241, 8 HR, 44 RBI, 81 OPS+
    * Miguel Cabrera: .322, 32 HR, 94 RBI, 137 OPS+
    * Placido Polanco: .256, 10 HR, 72 RBI, 38 2B, 80 OPS+
    * Adam Everett: .267, 4 HR, 54 RBI, 77 OPS+
    * Brandon Inge: .266, 38 HR, 108 RBI, 160 K, 96 R, 123 OPS+
    * Curtis Granderson: .255, 36 HR, 30 SB, 142 K, 86 RBI, 107 OPS+
    * Magglio Ordonez: .264, 8 HR, 56 RBI, 20 2B, 79 OPS+
    * Justin Verlander: 16-8, 3.54 ERA, 218.2 innings, 260 K
    * Edwin Jackson: 12-8, 2.59 ERA, 229.1 innings, 186 K
    * Rick Porcello: 16-12, 4.14 ERA, 174 innings, 94 K
    * Armando Galarraga: 10-14, 5.03 ERA, 186 innings
    * Fernando Rodney: 4.25 ERA, 34 SV, 34 SVOPP, 72 innings, 60 K

    Some things that jump out tremendously for the worse: Laird/Inge/Everett/arguably the pitching staff. The things that jumped out that were better: Cabrera (he’s insane right now)/Polanco/Ordonez. Sure Maggs doesn’t have the power that we may want - but at least he’s hitting for a better average right now. Heck, if we’re going to pay him next year anyway - we might as well play him while he’s hitting a bit better.

  2. [...] Wondering how the Tigers hitters are doing after the All-Star Break?- Blake at Spot Starters breaks down every offensive position post all-star break. I am afraid to take a peak. [...]
