Rough Start Out East

August 11th, 2009 Posted in 2009 Season, Edwin Jackson, Jarrod Washburn, Justin Verlander

Last night was supposed to be a good pitching match up for the Tigers.  However, Edwin Jackson faltered early and big ol’ Brad Penny did a decent job of keeping the Tigers bats off-balance.  Is it possible the Tigers top starters are starting to run out of gas?

The Tigers made a deal for Jarrod Washburn with this sort of situation in mind.  They knew they were not deep enough in the rotation and Washburn was brought on to solve that problem.  However, over the past two weeks the Tigers top arms having been falling short of their previous performance.  Let’s take a look:

  • Justin Verlander’s last three starts: 5.57 ERA
  • Edwin Jackson’s last three starts: 4.50 ERA in only 16 innings
  • Jarrod Washburn’s two starts with Detroit: 8.74 ERA

These are small sample’s, I know.  However, it is a valid concern.  If the Tigers and their feeble offense want to have any shot at making the playoffs, they will need these three guys to turn it around…and quick.

BallHype: hype it up!

Porcello getting rejected really PISSED me off. I rarely get emotional about these kinds of things but I was quite upset. He clearly wasn’t trying to throw at him.

Agree totally. I was watching the game with Red Sox fans and most of them thought it was intentional. However, the Boston broadcasters and studio crew all agreed that it looked like an accident. I still bet he gets suspended.
