The Spot Starters

Covering the ups and downs of the Detroit Tigers.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

The Good
These days Placido Polanco is resembling well… Placido Polanco. In the last ten games Polanco is 19/48 and batting .396, raising his average on the season to a more respectable .276. Sunday afternoons clutch single in the eighth brought in the go ahead run. Polanco was my pick to turn things around after the All-Star break on our Mid-Season Report Card. Let’s hope the career .300 hitter remains hot as he is an important part of our offense. One thing is certain, as of late Poly is on FIRE!

The Bad
Brandon Inge is slowly changing his name back to Brandon Cringe. Since the All-Star break he is just 14/74 which equates to a robust .189. During that time Mr. Cringe has hit just ONE HOME RUN, STRUCK OUT 27 TIMES and walked just 7 times. Oh yeah, that new mustache is coming in nicely though…right! His respectable average of .268 has fallen to .252 as well. To top it off someone somewhere is commenting on how great it is that hes playing through that little injury of his. Come on Brandon, you are very close to being bumped down to my Ugly list.

The Ugly

I really hate to kick a wounded Tiger but Chris Lambert was terrible in his season debut. In 1 2/3 he some how managed to give up seven hits and walk two. As if the previous five runs surrendered by Verlander were not enough to overcome, Lambert then dumped gasoline on the fire surrendering six earned runs (one let in by Miner). I think we all agree that perhaps its Zach Simmons time for long relief.

  1. Nice to see you posting again!

I’m pretty sure you can divide all Tigers fans in two groups. Those that love Inge and those that hate Inge. Regardless of what side you’re on you prove a great point. Inge has been aweful since the break, I say blame it on bullpen catcher Scott Pickens for his stellar pitching performance in the derby.

  2. Agree with Ryan on the Cringe line. Cringe has always been a better fielder than a hitter. You expect more offense, but year after year you are disappointed. Earlier this year, the bandwagon fans were all about how this was the year. Though 23 HRs is more than we have come to expect from him, he is coming back to that 239 average that makes him Cringe. If he would learn to hold onto some of the balls he fields and stop throwing them into the first row of seats, his errors would come down a lot. All in all, it would make him a better player. People do remember the great plays he makes, but we remember the errors, usually which cost the team, even more.
