Perry Quietly Doing Work

By JAYRC • Jul 8th, 2009 • Category: 2009 Season, Ryan Perry

On June 21st Ryan Perry was sent down to Toledo to iron out some issues with his command. Perry was 0-1 with a 4.28 ERA, allowing 24 hits over 27 1/3 innings with 21 walks and 25 strikeouts. Since being sent down to Toledo he has quietly logged 10 very solid innings. Perry is 1-0 with a 0.90ERA and 2 saves. He has struck out 10 batters and scattered just 6 hits. Most importantly though Perry has walked just 3 batters in 10 innings of work. I’m not giving him a plane ticket to Detroit quite yet, but this is very encouraging news. It is obvious that Ryan Perry is taking his assignment seriously and is avoiding the free pass. He is throwing strikes on a regular basis and while keeping his ERA and WHIP down. This is the Ryan Perry that we saw in Spring Training and this is the Ryan Perry that we need down the stretch. I will continue to keep an eye on him and will keep you updated.

  1. I was thinking of checking up on him. I saw he got a second save last night.

  2. Ditto! I was just wondering how he was faring. THanks

  3. Well, this is certainly good news. Thanks for the update. I was curious about Perry, too. I wonder if Dolsi gets sent back down when Perry is finally ready. Or will it be Ni? I must say that I kind of like Ni because we need more than 1 lefty out there, and he’s done a nice job. I like Dolsi a lot, but I think maybe he’s the odd man out here.

I would think Dolsi would be the odd man out when Perry returns. I like Dolsi as much as the next guy but unless Fu-Te Ni unravels you have to think it’s Dolsi to Toledo. I agree that Ni has been a nice suprise thus far, he has taken some pressure off of Seay and gotten some key outs. It is imperative to have two solid lefties in the pen, let’s hope he keeps it up.
As for Perry, I just hope they keep him down for awhile to really correct the command issue. I thought ten innings logged was a solid amount of time to bring up his success. Let’s all hope it continues. There is no doubt in my mind that this kid will anchor our bullpen for years to come. You can even take it a step further if you look at Satterwhite and Weinhardt who are also tearing it up in relief. The bullpen should be solid by 2010.

  5. he will be back, he is too good of a pitcher not to be. Thanks for the update.
