Covering the ups and downs of the Detroit Tigers.

A Quick Look Back

By Blake VandeBunte • Jun 3rd, 2009 • Category: 2009 Season

It is now June 3, 2009. The Tigers are currently 28-22 and in first place in the AL Central (for now). Here’s a look back at what the Tigers record was through June 2nd the past few years:

  • 2009: 28-22
  • 2008: 24-33
  • 2007: 31-24
  • 2006: 36-19
  • 2005: 25-26
  • 2004: 24-28
  • 2003: 14-40
  • 2002: 20-34

The Tigers are basically right where they were in 2007, when they finished with 88 wins and out of the playoff picture. 88 wins in 2009, may just get the job done, though.

These 2009 Tigers certainly have their flaws but looking at those records from 2002-2003 really helps put things in perspective. Back then, the Tigers were out of the playoffs by the time the Calendar rolled into May, so I’ll take the occasional road bump in 2009.

That being said, the club look pretty bad tonight against the Boston Red Sox. This series isn’t really setting up all that well for the Tigers. They needed to win the opener because they seemed to have the edge on the mound. Now they have to send Armando Galarraga and Dontrelle Willis out there against a patient Boston lineup. That just screams disaster to me.

  1. Detroit has never done well against Matsuzaka though. And not necessarily in getting men on base. I mean they had 9 hits last night (6 from Dice-K) - and I remember last year he walked and insane 10 batters (8 from Dice-K) and with 5 hits on top of that we only scored 3. Finishing it up has always been a problem against Matsuzaka and Boston.

  2. Great point. I actually thought about that last night, because I was at the game he pitched in Detroit last season and it was one of the most frustrating games I ever attended.
