Sheffield Heading Back to the Big Apple
By Blake VandeBunte • Apr 3rd, 2009 • Category: 2009 Season, Gary SheffieldThings did not go well for Gary Sheffield his first time through New York City. He left the Yankees on poor terms with the club and finds himself the target of boos and much worse every time he returns to Yankee Stadium. Apparently he wants another shot at that scene.
Sheffield is this close to signing a one-year deal with the New York Mets according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. According to Sherman, the Mets plan on giving Sheffield plenty of playing time and they will obviously have to play him in the field.
The Mets corner outfield spots are less than impressive, so in a way this move makes some sense. However, it could potentially kill them defensively. This is a team that will now play dinosaurs like Sheffield and Carlos Delgado as much as they possibly can. While these guys may have a bit of offense left in their thanks they are hardly Gold Glovers in the field.
Sheffield will likely only get the veteran’s minimum of $400,000, but since he’s still owed $14M by the Tigers, I’m guessing he won’t be pinching any pennies. Good luck to the Mets on this one.

Over / Under on games played in the field before Shef’s first injury….ehhh about 6, whaddya think?
Seriously. Mets fans should expect nothing and be pleasantly surprised with any major contributions. It sure would be annoying if he hit .280 with 25 homers wouldn’t it?
He will hit his 500th homerun a week into the season and then he will be met at home plate by Omar Minaya with his release papers.
Haha…I don’t think the Mets will need any help selling tickets. They have a good team and a brand new stadium. They don’t need him for ticket sales.
