More Cuts

The Tigers made their latest round of cuts from spring training.  Exiting the big league camp are:

  • Freddy Dolsi
  • Casey Fien
  • Fu-Te Ni

Dolsi pitched in 42 games for the Tigers in 2008 but often times seemed to be in over his head.  When you watched him pitch you saw something though, he is clearly very talented.  He’s got a nice fastball and his offspeed stuff is dynamite when he’s got control over it.  But isn’t that true about almost every pitcher?

Fien and Ni had an outside shot at making the club to start the season, but strong performances from guys like Juan Rincon have made that less than likely.

All three of these guys could see time with the Tigers later in the season as injuries and other factors make roster moves inevitable.

I recently bought the latest Baseball Prospectus book for the 2009 season.  Here’s a bit of what they had to write about Dolsi:

He was inconsistent but at times dazzling for Detroit before shoulder soreness shut him down.  Dolsi has an oustanding arm, consitently getting into the mid-90s with his fastball, but he’s still rough around the edges, especially in terms of his secondadry stuff and command.  He’s not guaranteed a big-league role in 2009, but he’s still seen as an important bullpen contributor at some point down the line.
