Rotation In Trouble
By Blake VandeBunte • Mar 8th, 2009 • Category: 2009 Season, Dontrelle Willis, Fernando Rodney, Nate Robertson, Scott WilliamsonNate Robertson and Dontrelle Willis were thought to have an edge at gaining the final spot in the Tigers rotation because they are both left-handed. Here is how they did against the Yankees this afternoon:
- Nate Robertson: 2 innings, 3 hits, 3 ER, 4 BB, 1 HR
- Dontrelle Willis: 2 innings, 3 hits, 2 ER, 2 BB
And, just for kicks, here is what reliever Scott “I now have no chance of the making the team” Williamson did:
- Scott Williamson: 0.2 innings, 2 hits, 6 ER, 4 BB, 1 HR
Robertson and Willis have both been pretty bad so far this spring. Both have had trouble with the walks and just have not gotten the job done. Couple this all with Jeremy Bonderman’s questionable health and you can see the runs just getting added to the scoreboard. The whole thing just makes me think that 2009 could be 2008 all over again. We shall see.
On the plus side, Fernando Rodney was outstanding. He struck out the side in the seventh inning and did not allow a base runner. Rodney struggled with his control throughout 2008 so it was nice to see him put together a strong outing today, even if they rest of the guys were pretty bad.
The Tigers are now 3-6 this spring.
Just keep telling yourself it doesn’t really matter. See if that works for you. When I do it, I can just tell that I’m lying to myself.

Pedro Martinez is still out there, isn’t he? He pitched well yesterday. Anything’s better than Nate or Dontrelle right now.
The problem with Pedro is that there is no way he could make more than 20 starts. He also got hit around bit in the NL last season, I’d hate to rely on him in the AL.
