Guillen Takes A Stand
By Blake VandeBunte • Feb 19th, 2009 • Category: 2009 Season, Carlos GuillenIn Jon Paul Morosi’s blog today, he mentions that Carlos Guillenis totally open to playing in the World Baseball Classic this March. The Classic clashes (that’s alliteration, son) with Spring Training but teams have to pretend to be okay with that fact. Anyway, Guillen is open to playing if he is penciled in as the left fielder.
Guillen is set to be the Tigers every day left fielder this season and I’m sure he feels he needs the practice. He won’t let the WBC get in his way of being prepared for the season. From Morosi’s blog:
“If I don’t play leftfield, I’m not participating in the Classic,” Guillen said this morning. “I don’t want to (mess) around with my career. … If I don’t see myself in the lineup in leftfield on the first day, you’ll see me (back) here.”
Guillen said he needs to get a lot of repetitions in leftfield this spring in order to handle the position well during the regular season.
That can serve as further evidence that Carlos Guillen is, in fact, totally awesome. You can’t spurn your nation in this thing and just say “screw it.” Guillen is telling everyone he’d love to represent Venezuela, but only if it doesn’t get in the way of his own growth and improvement to help the Detroit Tigers.
Also, the World Baseball Classic does not interest me at all. Just putting that out there.
