More Julio Lugo Chatter

By Blake VandeBunte • Nov 7th, 2008 • Category: Cale Iorg, Dontrelle Willis, Julio Lugo

The rumor that won’t die so far this off-season is the Julio Lugo to Detroit talk.  Lugo is a man without a position in Boston and the Tigers just happen to need a shortstop for the short-term.  From CBS:

The Boston Red Sox are among the clubs who have done some background work on Detroit left-hander Dontrelle Willis, indicating the Tigers’ preference for trading part of what last winter had been such a promising deal with Florida. Detroit needs a shortstop after cutting ties with Edgar Renteria, and a Willis-for-Julio Lugo swap would help each club unload a bad contract and help fill a need. Willis is due $22 million over the next two seasons; Lugo is owed $18 million over the next two seasons, plus he has a $9 million option for 2011 that vests with 2,400 plate appearances between 2007 and 2010 and 600 plate appearances in 2010.

Again, the Tigers are looking for short term solution at short until prospect Cale Iorg is ready to take the job over.

One shortstop possibility is Rafael Furcal.  Furcal is a free agent but is said to be seeking at least a four year deal.  Considering his age and his health history, the odds of him heading to the Tigers is becoming less and less likely.

  1. I’m sorry, but why go for Lugo when we have Ramon Santiago already on our club? I think he deserves a shot over a “bad contract” player some other team is trying to unload. I’ve heard the “challenge trade” argument, which normally would be fine, but I feel that to get Lugo would be a slap in the face to a player like Santiago, and wouldn’t necessarily be any better. I guess I’d rather take a risk on one of our own, than on Lugo. I know, I’m such a homer.

  2. who starts these rumors lugo for nate robertson or dontrelle willis some redsox media lackey that is trying to make something stick on the wall and fly to help boston. lugo’s offense and defense is horrible. why trade for him before Rick Knapp can try and help either underachieving lefthander. john mcdonald is a defensive shortstop that can also play some third and second. Plus another less expensive option has to be out there instead of doing the redsox a favor. And No to varitek and boras’ seeking a multi year for posada type money. varitek has lost more than Pudge in the past year.

  3. I agree. Let’s keep Santiago. Worst case we end up with a pretty good defensive SS that can bat 8th or 9th, and he doesn’t cost $18M.
