Byrdak to Houston

By Blake VandeBunte • Apr 3rd, 2008 • Category: Tim Byrdak

Odds are we can officially close the Tim Byrdak era in Detroit.  The Free Press is reporting that Byrdak will sign a minor league deal with the Houston Astros.  The Astros are known to be a team short on pitching.  Being a lefty reliever one would have to assume that he stands to get more [...]

Tiger Release Byrdak

By Blake VandeBunte • Mar 26th, 2008 • Category: Tim Byrdak

The Tigers have released relief pitcher Tim Byrdak.  Byrdak appeared in 39 games for the Tigers in 2007 and posted an ERA of 3.20 and struck out better than a batter per inning.  That was last year.
This spring Byrdak entered camp with a job and he’d really have to screw it up to not make the [...]

Verducci on Tigers

By Blake VandeBunte • Mar 19th, 2008 • Category: Denny Bautista, Jim Leyland, Tim Byrdak, Todd Jones

I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of Sports Illustrated.  I just don’t think they put out anything that’s as good as ESPN or even Fox Sports, just my opinion.  However, I do still really enjoy Tom Verducci.  Verducci has been writing for SI now since 1993 and from reading his stuff, I can [...]

Bad News Bears

By Blake VandeBunte • Mar 18th, 2008 • Category: Fernando Rodney, Jacque Jones, Jeremy Bonderman, Tim Byrdak, Washington Nationals

So today was not the greatest day for the Tigers.  I have yet to watch the game from today and doubt I will find the time to watch my Tivo’d copy of the game.  Apparently they fell apart.  Apparently Bonderman threw fairly well in his longest outing of the spring (4.2 innings).  He did walk [...]

The Ugly Proof

By Blake VandeBunte • Mar 10th, 2008 • Category: 2008 season, Bobby Seay, Denny Bautista, Tim Byrdak, Todd Jones, Yorman Bazardo

I was talking to my dad yesterday on the phone.  Reason number one was to tell my family I had successfully made a reservation at PF Chang’s for us next Saturday.  Reason number two was to tell my dad that Todd Jones gave up 4 runs and blew a lead in the ninth inning.  As [...]

Big Spenders Need to be Smart

By Blake VandeBunte • Feb 29th, 2008 • Category: 2008 season, Bobby Seay, Jacque Jones, Marcus Thames, Tim Byrdak

Lynn Henning wrote today about how while the Tigers are spending money like it’s going out of style but that they’ve also found some bargains.  This is huge for teams with big payrolls.  The Yankees and Cubs and Mets have proven that spending a lot of money doesn’t result in a World Series win.  Look [...]

Win some, lose some

By Blake VandeBunte • Dec 12th, 2007 • Category: Bobby Seay, Chad Durbin, Dontrelle Willis, Marcus Thames, Miguel Cabrera, Nate Robertson, Tim Byrdak

The Tigers have opted to let Chad Durbin enter free agency.  This pretty much ends the Chad Durbin era in Detroit.  The Tigers had seven players facing arbitration this year.  The deadline to reach a deal is 11:59pm December 12th.   The seven players are:

Miguel Cabrera (he’s obviously being kept)
Dontrelle Willis (ditto)
Nate Robertson (ditto again)
Bobby Seay [...]
